I am so ready for Hillary.
Like most people, I cannot wait until this election is done, over, and passed, but I’ve set my focus on the positive: this is an absolutely monumental moment in history (herstory*) for women that will be talked about and studied for centuries to come. We are living in it, and that is overwhelmingly exciting. If everything goes as we hope, we are about to elect the very first Madame President of the United States. Whether you want to celebrate this hopeful victory, or just want to celebrate the end of this election, do so with a bang. This Election night menu gives a grand and festive salute to HRC.
Let’s start off easy with a fun way to label your aqua. Just a ruler and some colored pencils are all it takes.
Next, some snackatizers.
Did you know that pockets have a long history with feminism? These are pretty simple. Use a square cookie cutter to cut out pie crust pockets. Use a small, round cookie cutter to make the rounded pocket cut. There are two easy ways to make sure all the pockets are perfectly lined up:
1. Stack two dough squares and cut them with the round cutter at the same time.
2. Cut a single square’s corner with the round cutter. Save the excess corner dough scrap and use it as a template on the remaining dough squares. They’ll all turn out uniform.
Fill the pockets with whatever fillings you like. If you have something savory in mind, you could try brie and chopped apples, roasted mushrooms and butternut squash, broccoli and cheddar, cooked ground beef or turkey, caramelized onions, goat cheese and asparagus, spinach-artichoke spread, ham and brown sugar, or wilted spinach and feta. If you’re looking for something sweet, try pumpkin butter, raspberry jam, apple butter and caramel, milk chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, chopped maraschino cherries, sweetened cream cheese, lemon curd, or nutella and chopped hazelnuts. Another tip: If you do two different flavors, have one flavor made with the rounded cuts all facing left, and the other flavor with the rounded cuts all facing right. Just write down which is which so everyone will know! You could also do half sweet and half savory, adding a powdered sugar glaze to only the sweet pies, making it easy to differentiate the two.
Preheat oven to 400°. After making the round pocket “curve” in each square of dough, brush the edges of a dough square with egg wash. Add approximately a heaping tablespoon of filling to the middle of the square. Before placing on the top square, dock it by poking a few holes in the dough with a fork. Gently lay the top layer of tough over the filling, making sure the edges of the two will-be crusts line up. Do not press down on the filling. Use the tines of a fork to crimp the edges of the two layers of pie dough together to form a pocket. Carefully pick up the pocket and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat these steps with all pie dough until the baking sheet is filled but not crowded. If dough still remains, work on a second batch while the first set bakes. Brush tops and crimps of pies with egg wash. Bake these for 16-20 minutes, until dough is golden brown and does not appear wet. Serve pies warm or at room temperature.

Did you know that on average, women make only 79¢ for every dollar that the average man earns? But the injustice doesn’t end there. That’s just the statistic for white women. Far more importantly, women of color have it much worse. Black women make only 60¢ on the dollar, and Hispanic women, 55¢. We need a woman in the oval office who is highly motivated to close the wage gap.
On to the main dishes!
Your choice of pork or beef. A shoestring potato garnish reminds us of that head of hair we’ve all come to know and– tolerate.
Hot Sauce Mac and Cheese
Hillz and I share an affection for both Beyoncé and hot sauce. I’ve heard she always has a spicy condiment in her bag (swag). Likewise, I always make sure there’s a bottle nearby before I dig into a meal.
I stirred a bunch of hot sauce into this cheese sauce, then drizzled the final serving with sriracha, and garnished with jalapenos. Some toasted breadcrumbs sprinkled on top would be delicious as well.

For this, I bought rock candy and used my fingers to twist it off of the stick and break it apart. Carefully chopping it with a sharp knife will also work if you can’t remove the candy by hand.
Finally, adult beverages! You’re gonna need ’em.
I honestly can’t top my 4th of July cocktails, so let’s revisit them! I’ve renamed a couple to better fit the theme.
